Český Krumlov, Southern Bohemia, Czech Republic
On 19th October 2013 I was very fortunate in being able to attend the official opening of Muzeum Vltavínů. This museum is dedicated to moldavites and is thoroughly recommended to both the enthusiast and passing tourist. The museum walks you through the story of tektites and moldavites by means of a superb introductory video, poster presentations, informative displays and interactive computer models. The displays and video are in Czech, German and English. The museum is bang up-to-date from the scientific stand-point and therefore a valuable educational asset. It displays some of the finest known moldavites with innovative lighting that brings out the best in the specimens. The museum utilizes state of the art software, placing children in their comfort zone and allowing them to learn whilst having great fun!
The museum takes around 1 hour to tour, although the enthusiast will probably take longer. Leaving the museum you will informed, amazed, inspired and probably jealous that you don't have a museum like this! I cannot fault this museum in any way - it is perfect on all levels!
The museum is set in the beautiful medieval town of Český Krumlov in Southern Bohemia, which is an international tourist attraction in it's own right. The town and palace are well worth a couple of days of exploration. There are dozens of jewellers selling moldavite jewellery and rough stones, some boasting unique designs. The town of Český Krumlov is a cheap and convenient 3 hour bus ride from Prague (we used the 'Student Agency' bus company - definitely book in advance online). The town of Český Krumlov is located just a short drive from the main moldavite strewn field, making this a definite stop-off point!
The meeting on 19th October 2013 was well attended by Czech, German, Austrian and English moldavite enthusiasts. We met at the museum and enjoyed a tour by Vit, the curator. In the afternoon we travelled to Chlum sand pit and (with special permissions) searched for moldavites. Note that you cannot just turn up at the pit as it is a working quarry.
The slide shows below give a good insight into the museum. They do not, however, do the place justice! In order to fully appreciate what is on offer you must visit the Muzeum Vltavínů!
